Only a short drive away you will find the historic mining town of Waihi, and a little further on the beachside town of Waihi Beach. Waikino is also a great starting point to explore the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty.
Waihi is a historic gold mining town. You can see remnants of the old mining era, visit the museum, and view the current Martha Open Pit Mine.
The Martha Mine Pit Rim Walk takes you around the rim of the mine. It is an easy but spectacular 1 hour walk.
Waihi Beach is a coastal beach town located 12 mins drive from Waihi, or a 12 km cycle ride away. Waihi Beach has a 9 km stretch of beach providing surf and swimming, quaint shops and Sunday market. Bowentown is a further 5 km along a scenic route to Bowentown Heads and Shelly Bay.
